WHY GRANT WRITING IS MORE THAN JUST WRITING!

Grant writing is more than just writing words on an application form. It requires strategic thinking, lots of data, evidence, supporting documentation and a very clear project or program.

When talking to new clients about how we can help them with their grant applications, they are often just seeking support to put the words together and ‘write’ the grant. There is often little understanding about the depth of detail required to include in a successful application.

There is a perception that all that’s required is a great project that targets a specific audience with a clear need in the community. That if you tick all the boxes, you’re in with a chance.

What is often forgotten is that grant applications are highly competitive. There are many applicants seeking funding for a range of different projects and programs for every grant. Clearly not all applications will be successful.

The purpose of the grant application process is to allow the funders to determine which applicant will successfully achieve the funders ‘social return on investment’. The funder needs to feel confident investing funds in your project and your organisation will provide a better return than investing in other organisations and other projects.

Creative writing and well-formed sentences won’t convince them. Data and evidence of competency and credibility will.
