DONOR MANAGEMENT IN THE CURRENT ECONOMIC CLIMATE
With the current economic climate on the back of COVID it will no doubt become more challenging to retain funding from individuals, philanthropic foundations and organisations for your programs. There are however some simple strategies you can use to nurture your funders and continue to receive support during difficult economic times, or at least keep them warm should they pause their funding of your programs:
- Be understanding: Remember that regular and annual donors are not just supporting your charity, they could be donating to others as well, and with income stretched they have to make a choice about house-hold expenditure. If they choose to pause their donations to your charity be empathetic to their situation. Let them know you understand, let them know that their past contributions made a difference, keep them informed of your projects, in effect treat them like they are still giving. By doing this, rather than ignoring them, they are likely to renew their donations when their financial situation improves.
- Stay in touch: Regularly communicate with your funders, including updates on the impact of their donations and any changes or challenges the organisation is facing. Keep them informed and engaged with your charity’s work and progress, so they feel like they are part of your mission and understand the importance of continued funding.
- Be transparent: It is crucial to be honest and open with your funders about your charity’s financial situation and any changes or adjustments that need to be made. Let them know how their contributions are being used, and if there are any shifts in priorities due to changing economic conditions.
- Demonstrate efficiency: Communicate that your charity is operating efficiently and effectively. Highlight your impact and how you are making the most of every donation to achieve your goals.
- Consider new ways to fundraise: Now is the time it may be necessary to be creative in your fundraising efforts, such as new campaigns or collaboration with other charities etc.
In essence: Maintain communication, be transparent, show gratitude, demonstrate impact, and be creative in fundraising efforts. By implementing some of these strategies, you can retain funders by strengthening relations, and encourage lapsed donors to re-engage, thus safeguarding your income generation now and in the future.
